| LOCATION: HIRASAR, INDIA OCTOBER 5, 2004 We may have to make some changes
to our travel plans. Maoist rebels have threatened to kill U.S. citizens
in Nepal. Reacting to this threat, the U.S. State Department issued a
travel warning. They are recommending that U.S. tourists leave or avoid
Nepal. Road travel outside the Kathmandu Valley is considered dangerous.
Among other events, bomb blasts at an American Compound have resulted
in the Peace Corps suspending operations in Nepal and the voluntary evacuation
of non-essential U.S. personnel. Any U.S. citizens in Nepal are cautioned
to keep a low profile. Low profile? How do you do that on a camel? Our
original plan was to cross Nepal. In light of the Maoist threat, we may
have to make changes. Unless we can get some assurance of safe passage,
a Nepal crossing may not occur. We are too big a target. At the present
time, we are still headed towards Nepal. Camel experts have told us that
the chances of two camel novices making it across India, let alone into
and through Nepal, are slim. Some people are even placing bets on how
far we will make it across India. How far do you think we will get? |
